A spicy beef-and-bean bowl

Saturday night. I’d meant to make something mellow and I’d reached for a chile at the last minute - the way I reach for an earring five minutes before leaving the house, the one more thing - and this bowl ended up much hotter than either of us was ready for. My husband drained his water and grinned. Long beans, tomato, ground beef, a lot of herbs at the end. There is no version of this where it wasn’t going to be good. The heat was just the extra.
